My Life as a Puzzle Piece

How does it all fit?

Name:
Location: T-Town, WA

Here I am. Just trying to figure out how the random things in my life piece together to make the beautiful portrait that God is painting. How long will it take? FOREVER! Who am I? I'm not quite sure yet. Where will I be in 10 years? Do I dare dream?

nichole nordeman ~ even then

It's a fear that keeps me wide awake
In the middle of the night
When the expectations are too great
And the bar gets raised too high

So I do the best with what I've got
And hope that no one knows
That I strain to see how I can
Try to stand on these toes
Until I'm measured
But You know better

Thank you Jesus
Even when you see us just as we are
Fragile and frail and so far from
Who we want to be
So thank You Jesus
even when the pieces are
broken and small
dreams shattered and scattered like the wind
Thank You even then

So I put aside the masquerade
and admit that I am not okay
Which may not be the thing to say
But I'm not ashamed to need You
more each day

Thank You Jesus
Even when You see us just as we are
Fragile and frail and so far from
who we want to be
So thank You Jesus
Even when the pieces are
Broken and small
Dreams shattered and scattered like the wind
Thank You even then

We raise the standard
and try to reach it
We'll never make it
And we don't need to

We are fragile and frail
and so far from who we want to be

Jobs of a maid of honor

**Plan bachelorette party
**Plan bridal shower
**Learn how to dress the bride (it's a chore for sure!)
**Be the rock in the midst of the bride, her mother, and her grandmother
**Stay sane herself
**Buy a bridesmaid dress (it's gonna be amazing! will post pictures when I get it)
**Get her hair and nails done

The list is quickly growing. The date is in 86 days. It was going to be 7 or 8 months from now. The shock has not yet faded. My best friend is getting married. I LOVE YOU SHAMROCKS!

Weddings, Jesus, and Wii

I wish the simplicity of childhood could follow me into this unkown land we like to call adulthood without the immaturity. My week has been stinking crazy. I know I can handle it, but it just came on so fast. I just spent 3 hours today with my best friend picking out a wedding dress. Which, by the way, is gorgeous! I'm really excited for her to get married, but it just means that we are growing up. Since I spent the whole day talking about weddings, of course I thought of mine. The one that is nowhere near planned, mostly because there is no groom. Not for another 3 years, AT LEAST. But the thought of even being in a relationship, let alone a serious one, freaks me out! I get so angry and hurt by the guys who are just my friends. What happens when someone who I passionately care about hurts me? I feel like I'm a ticking time bomb sometimes. I had a conversation with someone today. He asked me how I was doing. I said I'm surviving. Not thriving but surviving. He said he was too. Then I asked him how we fix this slight problem. He said "OH I KNOW...Jesus!" What a simple yet extremely complicated answer. After that, I said that I wished he could just sit next to me in person and just tell me what to do. Why can't it be that easy?

Today was still a good day. Tomorrow, life continues. The thing I'm most stoked about: playing wii with Justin and Jessi. One of the coolest brother and sister duos ever to walk to planet. Second only to my brother and me =)

If I didn't have so many friends, I would actually be able to get things done. These last couple weeks I've been out of school, I thought I would be running, cleaning, working, and getting my life figured out. I've done some of that. Mostly I've worked and hung out with friends. Which is amazing, but I'm realizing that many things are getting pushed to the side such as cleaning, running, and getting a job. Grrr....So would I rather be lonely and get stuff done, or have a lot of friends and get nothing done. I'm sure if I really tried I wouldn't have to choose cause I was able to do all of that while in school. Time with my friends did suffer however. Hopefully in the next couple weeks I'll be able to figure out how to be an adult. I do not want to be the adult that looks down her nose at people who aren't "adults" cause I've had friends like that. So here I am, a college graduate trying to figure out her life...it's a new world! By the way, my friends and family are definitely the most important thing in my life. "All you need is love, love is all you need."

On a lighter note, I got an iPod for graduation so I'm sitting here listening to the across the universe soundtrack. It makes me happy.

The tide is turning
This is redemptions hour
In the midst of a world lost for love
You are all we have now

The lost returning
Salvation is all around
In the midst of the world broken down
You are all we have now

This is love to break the world indifferent

And this hope is ours

Our eyes are open
Every chain now broken
In this world
We are different

Excerpts from one of my favorite songs, Point of Difference. I turned this cd on this morning and it made me think. It reminded me of the summer when I *wanted* every chain to be broken in myself and in my friends. It reminded me of the time that I wanted to be the difference in my friends. It reminded me of when I thought I knew exactly who God is.

Now I'm not so sure. Now I'm confused. Now I see gray, rather than the clear black and white of childhood. I had a challenging conversation with a friend from work. It caused me to think about believing in Jesus. I realized I can't explain in terms that other people can understand my love for and my belief in Jesus. I found myself struggling with the question, "What do I get out of believing in God?" I can't explain it! When someone says that they can only see God as an idea and not as a being, I find it difficult to answer them.

My heart aches for my friends. My heart aches for their pain. At the same time, my heart aches for my own pain. It's as if I am looking at myself from the outside. I see the pain but I have no idea how to touch it or if I even want to touch it or allow someone else to touch it. I wish I could snap my fingers and see my friends and me happy and fulfilled.

Then my question is what is happy and fulfilled? How can I let go of my chains when only belief is on the other side. I cannot see exactly what it looks like. I cannot touch the promise. I just have to believe it's somewhere out there. The timing of the promise of fulfillment isn't even known. All I can do is let go of the chains and hope that there really is a God out there who is only truth. How can I not believe in Someone that has never let me down? It seems impossible but somehow it happens.

How can I help others along this path called faith when I'm tripping constantly? How can I reconcile what I know to be true and what's facing me every day?

I don't know if I'm crying for myself, for my friends, for my confusion, or because I pulled an all-nighter last night. I'm bewildered and I'm not sure where to go from here. I want to give up and I don't feel adequate to be an influence in anyone's life and yet God continually puts people in front of me to influence whether it's co-workers, family, or youth group kids. I long to be an influence to people but I don't have the "goodness", "holiness", "righteousness", or any other religious term used to describe leaders.

My prayer is that in my lifetime, I am able to see my friends and me continue down whatever road we're on and find fulfillment, whatever that means.

California road trip

If you didn't know, I went to California this weekend. I flew down there to drive with Holly back to washington because there was no one that was available to do that with her. This trip was the best trip to go on right after finals. It was probably one of the best random things I've done so far in my crazy life. Basically, everything went opposite to plan. So many things went wrong, but it was funny wrong, not I'm afraid we're never getting to washington wrong.

The trip started with my getting to the airport at 8 in the morning. I checked in and everything and went and got starbucks coffee and a scone. I sat down at the gate and managed to spill my coffee and drop my scone. 5 second rule, right? Then I went into the bathroom and dropped my boarding pass in the sink. Luckily it was not the part that had to be scanned in and I got it out within two seconds.

I got on the plane and we were pretty much on time. The plan was to land at 1:45 and then Holly would pick me up around 2 and we would go straight from there to her friend Jason's house in Paradise California which was 8 hours from the airport. My phone was dying so I didn't want to leave it on. I called Holly and asked her when she was planning on being there and she said that her professor was taking a long time to let her out of lab. So she didn't get to the airport until 4. As I got in her car, she said that she had left two of her suitcases in her room back at APU. So we drove back the half hour to get to her apartment.

Finally, at around five or six we were on our way to Paradise. About an hour and a half into the drive, I was sleeping cause I had been up since 4 and Holly was in a hurry. We got pulled over. Holly got a ticket. California does their tickets weird. She won't know exactly what the penalty is until it gets mailed to her house. weird.

We continued to Paradise without too much going wrong. Jason was a little weird and was giving us confusing directions even though we had good directions from google but apparently he was confused. He thought we were coming from San Francisco instead of Sacremento. We got to Paradise around one or one thirty. We stood around in the freezing cold talking to Jason and he drops the bomb on us: He forgot to tell his parents that people were going to stay the night. He ended up buying us a hotel room, which was amazing of him, even though he forgot that we were coming!

We were planning on staying the next night as well, so we asked him where we were going to stay. He says, "You're staying more than one night?" We roll our eyes and he told us that we could probably stay with his friend Kevin. He invites us to his band practice the next morning and after sleeping in till 10 we went out to where his band was practicing.

We assumed he had told his bandmates that we were coming in, so we found a side door that was unlocked and walked in. They were in the middle of a song, and all of a sudden they stopped. "How did you get in here?" Holly said that we came in from the ceiling. They didn't get it was a joke. "Wait, how did you get in here?" We told them that it was through a side door. Then Jason goes, "Holly...Holly, is that you?" And Holly says, "Oh my gosh, Jason! wow it's so good to see you!" Jason's bandmates say "how did you know we were here?" and holly says "well, we were driving past and we heard music and I knew that Jason was in a band so I thought hey, maybe this is Jason's band." They still didn't get the joke. Meanwhile, Holly thought they were all in on the joke, but apparently only holly, jason, and I knew what was going on. At one point, Kevin (who was the one we were supposed to stay with) says "so where are you guys staying tonight?" Jason and Holly look at each other and laugh because obviously Jason hadn't asked Kevin yet if we could stay there. That was a little bit of an awkward moment, but we had already decided to keep driving and try to make it to lake oswego, oregon that day.

We drove to Chico that afternoon for some really good chinese food. We tried to decide how to describe it and we settled on "chinese barbecue served subway style." We got back to paradise around 4 or so and we started driving. Somehow we got turned around and we looked around and realized we were getting more and more into the middle of nowhere. We decided to pull over at the next house we saw. We saw a group of log cabin-like shacks. We pulled over and walked down the driveway. It was the creepiest place EVER! We both had really eery feelings about it but it was getting dark and we decided to just go for it and knock on the door. We felt a little better when we saw the christmas decorations because we assumed that people wouldn't put up decorations unless they wanted people to see them. We knocked on the door and the loudest, meanest bark came out on the other side. There was no movement other than that so we went to the next shack. We walked up to it and realized there was a paper that was shaped like a hand. All the fingers were taped down except for one: the middle finger. I said "Holly, we are not knocking on that door, because there's a paper hand flipping us off!" So we walked back to our car, glad to get out of there and we saw someone get out of their car across the street. We asked them how to get back to the 99 highway and he explained it. So we basically went an hour or so out of our way.

We finally got back to the right freeway and thought the rest of the trip was going to go smoothly. For the most part it was fine but there were still some hiccups along the way.

In Yreka, lights were flashing and we got pulled over again. Holly got a second ticket only 5 miles from oregon! We got into oregon and decided to get gas. We had a shell and chevron gas card and there was a sign for a shell station in ashland. We took that exit and the next sign said "shell, 3 miles." wow. Long ways off the freeway but whatever, we decided to keep going. We got the shell station only to find that it was closed. We were in oregon and we couldn't pump our own gas because it was against the law. So we went back the way we came. We got to the I-5 on ramp and realized that there was no sign for I-5 north, only I-5 south. We got on it because it was too late to turn around. The next exit was a whole 6 miles away. So all in all we went 18 miles backtracking out of our way. It was horrid! We stopped for gas and to switch drivers and I started driving.

I drove for another 2 hours but I was so tired that as soon as Holly was ready to drive again we pulled over and switched. She continued driving until we got to her roommate's family's house in Lake Oswego, Oregon at 2:30 in the morning. We recounted our ordeal to her two roommates (one of them was visiting the other one) and went to bed. We got up around 10, visited with the roommate's family and left around one thirty. I drove the whole way back and we got back by 5. And that ended our trip.

I think I might be forgetting some things...but that's most of the story!

last final

I just sent off my last paper. I am done with school. Now I have to spend the rest of the day cleaning my room and packing it up so I can check out of my apartment. Then I desperately need to take a nap. Tonight is my graduation celebration at chopstix! I'm really excited. Basically I'm just excited to see everyone and be really happy that I'm graduated. It's surreal. But now I feel like I can start my life! It's like my life has been on hold for so long just to get through college. I am so excited to get involved again with youth group and teaching sunday school again. I don't feel like worship team is something that I need to be getting involved in right now. I need a change. Plus, I don't really feel like music is something that I'm going to be doing forever as the one thing God wants me to do. Kids. That's what my passion is. Someday I'll be a great mom but before then I'm gonna get some practice =)

this is from the band, flyleaf, from their web site

Heavy music and pained lyrics go together like cake and ice cream, and Belton, Texas quintet, Flyleaf, aren't about to break with tradition. But while many loud rockers reopen old wounds by singing about their broken homes and broken hearts, Flyleaf confront past traumas to heal old scars and prove in the process that hope shines brighter than despair.
